Why are fallow land so important?

31 July 2024 - Fallow land? ‘I can recommend it’, says farmer Christian Eimer in the new CAP4GI video. In just under 4 minutes, two farmers and an ecologist explain the benefits of fallow land for agriculture, society and biodiversity. 

Unjustifiably, ‘non-productive’ areas often have a bad reputation in the profession. Farmers Jan Lanvers and Christian Eimer explain the importance of fallow land in practice and allay concerns about its management. The scientist Dr Guy Pe'er (UFZ/iDiv) emphasises the effectiveness of the measures - not only for biodiversity, but also for the agricultural sector itself.
